Globe Telecom: Mobile coverage in Visayas now at 90%; restoration nears completion

Globe Telecom

Globe Telecom said mobile coverage in Visayas region is already at 90% of its network and restoration of affected cell sites is now approaching completion. Following accelerated efforts to repair and rehabilitate affected sites, majority of areas in Samar, Leyte and Biliran provinces now have access to call and text services.

The company said 90% of its 2G-enabled sites in Visayas are already up and running while 88% of its 3G sites in the region are now operational. The company also said it is currently fast-tracking the rehabilitation of a relay site in Eastern Samar. Once completed, such relay station will provide cellular coverage for the entire province.

Areas where mobile services have been restored recently include Abuyog, Mahaplag, Julita, MacArthur and Suhi in Leyte;  Culaba in Biliran;  San Isidro and Biri in Northern Samar;  Balete, Batan, Cuartero and Dumalag in Aklan; Biri and Las Navas  in Northern Samar; Cabiga and Tagapul-an  in Western Samar;  Dolores in  Eastern Samar; Jamindan in Capiz; and Odlot in North Cebu.

Meantime, the company’s network preparedness and resiliency program is currently being reassessed in the wake of severe damage brought by typhoon Yolanda.  “While our network resiliency program is constantly under review, the devastation wrought by the typhoon has prompted a deeper evaluation into engineering and design of the network to better prepare us for natural calamities like Yolanda,” said Robert Tan, Chief Technical Adviser.

The review is in line with commitment to deliver public service even and especially during times of disaster, Tan emphasized.
