Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation Supports DENR Secretary’s Project

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility Program (CSRP) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on the establishment of mangrove and/or bamboo plantation project. The MoA was signed by MMPC President and CEO Mr. Yoshiaki Kato and Environment Secretary Regina Paz L. Lopez at the DENR Central Office last February 28, 2017.

It can be recalled that Secretary Lopez is pushing for a massive mangrove and bamboo plantation nationwide highlighting the mangroves’ importance as the first line of defense for the communities against the impact of strong waves, storm surges and flooding occurrences. It also acts as habitats for various marine animals. On the other hand, bamboo does not only provide sources of construction materials, pulp, paper, fiber and food products but it is capable of sequestering as much as 400 percent of carbon per unit area, while giving off 35% more oxygen than other trees.

As stated in the MoA, DENR will provide the necessary technical assistance in nursery operation, procurement of planting materials, plantation establishment and plantation maintenance and protection while MMPC on the other hand will allocate support funds for the various activities necessary for the completion of the project. The DENR is yet to identify and delineate the project site/s candidate for Sustainable Integrated Area Development by the establishment of mangrove and/or bamboo plantation which shall cover an aggregate area of 100 hectares.
