PNP, Globe conduct crackdown on network hacking operations

Police operatives together with Globe Telecom security team nabbed a young Korean national and a Filipino operator in separate incidents over the weekend for hacking into the International Gateway Facilities (IGFs) of the telecom firm. More details after the jump.

Arrested during the raids were Carlo Dadula, 21, a native of Eastern Samar and Yoon Nayoung, 37, wife of Kim Yunsog, another Korean national who is alleged to be the financier and operator of the illegal activity. Yunsog was not around during the raid but will also be criminally charged. Both suspects are now detained pending inquest proceedings and are being charged with violation of R.A. 8484 or the Access Device Regulation Act of 1998 for allegedly engaging in International Simple Resale (ISR).

ISR refers to the unauthorized routing and completing of international long distance calls using lines, cables, antennae, and/or air wave frequency and connecting these calls directly to the local or domestic exchange facilities of the country where destined. ISR operators often lease dedicated lines to make direct calls abroad and use the facilities to sell international call minutes to consumers at a much lower price.

"The rampant practice of international simple resale is robbing off networks, not just Globe, of revenues which are supposed to be used to subsidize capital extensive local exchange networks that allow landline users to enjoy low monthly charges," said Atty. Froilan M. Castelo, Globe Head for Corporate and Legal Services Group.

He added: "Globe will remain proactive and relentless in capturing ISR perpetrators nationwide through our strengthened partnerships with the police and the courts."

The Koreans' operate at Room 202 Regina Heights Place, No. 385, Boni Avenue corner Vicente St., Mandaluyong City while Dadula was busted at his headquarters in Unit 201 Walled City Suites, No. 162 P. Jacinto St. corner Biglang-awa St., Bagong Barrio, Caloocan City.

Recovered evidences were two GSM Gateway equipment, hundreds of assorted Globe and TM SIM cards, and other computer gadgets.

Globe has been working with local government units and police forces for over a decade already in the battle against ISR syndicates.
