Smart’s Free to Tweet promo launched to support Gilas Pilipinas

This August, Filipino basketball fans once again have another important reason to unite and rally behind the country’s men’s national basketball team, Gilas Pilipinas, as they compete against Asia’s powerhouse teams in the 27th International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Championship. More details after the jump.

As Gilas Pilipinas shoot for history, wireless leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) is rallying support for the national team as it tries to redeem the glory and put the country back in the international basketball map.

“Gilas Pilipinas is in for a difficult battle ahead but I’m sure they will play all out for our flag,” said Dexter Chan, manager for Smart Internet Marketing. “With a few weeks left before the FIBA Asia Championship, our athletes need all the support that they can get and it will surely mean a lot if they know that their basketball-crazy kababayans are cheering for them.”

“As a way to drum up support for the team, we are happy to offer our subscribers the Free To Tweet promo where they can send their “tweets of encouragement” to their favorite Gilas players, follow updates about the team, and more at no connectivity cost,” said Chan.

Smart and TNT subscribers simply have to type http://m.twitter.com on their mobile browser URL and start enjoying the full Twitter experience. With this promo, the hoops junkie subscribers can follow the Twitter accounts of @JAlapag3, @LA_Tenorio, @GNorwood5, @jeffreichan, @DouthitMarcus, and other Gilas team members. They can also check their newsfeeds for live scores and results, send tweets to the players and fellow fans, upload photos, and send direct messages. To get more details about the promo and how they can avoid data charges, users can text TWITTER to 211 (for Prepaid and regular Postpaid users), or to 7577 (for All-In users), or to 9990 (for Freedom users).

For Chot Reyes (@coachot), head coach of Gilas Pilipinas, the support of the millions of ardent Filipino fans will be a big factor in their campaign in the continental joust. “Filipinos are one of the most passionate basketball fans in the world. Every day as the tough competition approaches, we get an enormous outpour of support especially in social networking sites like Twitter and it’s a huge boost to our morale,” shared Reyes. “We invite all our kababayans to come support us in our bid to reclaim basketball glory and put this hoops-loving nation back on the world’s biggest stage.”

The FIBA Asia Championship slated from August 1-11 at the Mall of Asia Arena powered by PLDT and Ninoy Aquino Stadium, will serve as the qualifier to the 2014 FIBA World Championship to be held in Barcelona, Spain. Gilas Pilipinas will vie to secure one of the three slots to represent Asia in the World Cup. The last time the Philippines competed in the World Cup was in 1978.

“Gilas Pilipinas will fight hard to make every Filipino proud. Let’s do our part to make them feel that the whole country is behind them 100%,” ended Chan.
