DOST 6 invites inventors to join RICE 2013, deadline of submission of entries is on August 22!



DOST RICE 2013

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST VI) encourages neophytes and professional inventors in Western Visayas to showcase their ingenuity and craftiness through their research and locally developed technology inventions in the 2013 Regional Invention Contests and Exhibits (RICE) slated on September 3-5, 2013 in Robinsons Place Iloilo. More details after the jump.

The said invention contest which is in partnership with the DOST-Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI) is an excellent avenue for researchers to impart science-based scientific and technological ideas developed among their inventions to the public and private sectors. These innovations are likewise breakthroughs in the academe as well as research and development, thus, keeping abreast with the recent scientific findings and trends.

Inventions are bound to be featured in the following categories:

  1. Invention Category: Invention refers to any technical solution of a problem in any field of human activity which is new, involves an inventive step and is industrially applicable. It may be, or may relate to a product, or process, and their improvements, (Sec. 21, RA 8293). It shall be covered by invention patent still in force granted by the Intellectual Property Office - Philippines (IPOPHIL).
  2. Utility Model Category: Utility Model refers to any technical solution of problem in any field of human activity which is new and industrially applicable, within contemplation of the above statute (Sec. 109, RA 8293). It shall be covered by utility model patent /registration still in force granted by the IPOPHIL.
  3. Industrial Design Category: Industrial Design refers to any composition of lines or colors or any three-dimensional form whether or not associated with lines or colors: provided, that such composition or form gives a special appearance to and can serve as pattern for an industrial product or handicraft within the contemplation of the above statute (Sec. 112, RA 8293). It shall be covered by industrial design patent/registration still in force granted by the IPOPHIL.
  4. Creative Research Category: Creative Research refers to patent pending inventions, registration pending utility models and industrial designs and research results yet applied for patent, utility model and industrial design registration. Eligible under this category are new and useful machines/ devices/ gadgets, products or processes or an improvement of any of the foregoing; and non-biological/microbiological processes not contrary to public order, morals, public health and welfare.
  5. Student Creative Research Categories: Student Creative Research for High School and College refers to new and innovative projects/works made by college and high school students. Eligible projects/ works under this category are new and useful machines/ gadgets, products or processes or an improvement of any of the foregoing; and non-biological/microbiological processes not contrary to public order, morals, public health and welfare.

It can be recalled that last 2011, Negros Occidental National Science High School student Ydsan France Dungon bested other candidates in the DOST Regional Invention Contests and Exhibits (RICE) for Outstanding Research Category (Sibol Award) for his research entitled “Manually Operated Extruder Machine: Prototype in Making Leaf Briquettes”. His research then garnered Second Place during the 2012 National Invention Contests and Exhibits (NICE) held in celebration of National Science and Technology Week (NSTW).

The 2013 RICE winners will consist of (1) qualifier and two (2) runners-up per category. They will advance in the upcoming National Invention Contests and Exhibits (NICE) to represent the region. Application forms are now available at the DOST VI office or Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) nearest you.
