Preparing schools and teachers for the K-12 curriculum through Genyo e-Learning

Dr. Edizon Fermin of Miriam College

With rapid changes in education brought about by technology and the new K to 12 curriculum, schools now have to be able to keep up in order to stay relevant in the 21st century -- a challenge made even more difficult for schools that are still starting and thus, do not know how and where to begin adapting to these changes.

Through its Technology Forum on e-Learning Series, Diwa Learning Systems Inc is able to prepare our country’s teachers and school administrators for the challenges of teaching and learning in the 21st century. The company offers these events as a great starting point for schools who wish to prepare for the future and attune their curriculum according to global standards.

The series, which is usually attended by more than a thousand educators from all over the Philippines, raises two questions about 21st century learning that help attendees separate fact from fiction.

First: What exactly are we teaching our children? Through subject-specific breakout sessions, the forum immerses educators to K-to-12-enriched contents. Facilitated by actual teachers, the sessions include demonstrations on how the spiral progression and genre-based approach can make students better appreciate Math, Science, Filipino, Araling Panlipunan, and English - and how lessons based on these core subject areas can be applied in real life, increasing one’s chances of success in whatever career he or she chooses.

Second, the series asks: How are we teaching our students? In a world where kids learn how to type on a tablet computer faster than they learn how to write on paper, the impact of technology in the teaching and learning process cannot be ignored.

To demonstrate the role of technology in the context of 21st century education, the series took a number of educators to an exposure tour at First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities (FAITH) in Tanauan, Batangas. During the tour, the participants were made to observe how 21st century tools help enhance learning experience of the students. FAITH, recently hailed as the best ICT implementer in South Luzon by the Department of Education in Region IV, has successfully launched a school-wide implementation of technology-aided teaching and learning using a 7-inch tablet, e-textbooks, and a learning management system.

While the series focuses primarily on e-learning, it still recognizes that traditional printed resources such as textbooks and magazines are viable sources of 21st century education. Diwa’s printed resources, updated according to the new K-to-12 curriculum and which uses the blended learning approach, were demonstrated to have been just as effective as its digital counterparts in developing 21st century skills. The resources can also seamlessly integrate technology in the lesson plan.

When it comes to transporting classrooms to the 21st century, nothing comes close to Genyo e-Learning, the first and only fully integrated learning management system in the Philippines. Used by over 200 schools, Genyo gives teachers, students, and parents ready access to a rich library of interactive lessons in Filipino, Araling Panlipunan, Science, Math and English – anytime, anywhere. Genyo, with its ability to provide quick assessments and analysis of results, also helps level up the teaching experience and expertise of educators all over the country.

FAITH Demonstration

Diwa’s Technology Forum on e-Learning is a platform to encourage educators to keep pace with the fast-changing needs of the times so they can effectively prepare students for the challenges of the future. True, schools who are serious in moving towards 21st century education will encounter rough patches along the way, but with enough determination and good leadership, and by trusting the rich experience and K-to-12-ready resources of Diwa Learning Systems Inc., they will surely get there. Schools only need to have the willingness, and the publishing giant will be there to guide them every step of the way.
