How to do a STAYCATION

STAYCATION

You don’t need to read it twice.  STAYCATION, according to Oxford Dictionaries, is an informal noun that means ‘A vacation spent in one’s home country rather than abroad, or one spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions’.  The word was given birth from the early 21st century----which is the blend of the words: stay and vacation.  Simply put, it is the stay-at-home-vacation.  And right now you are actually reading the 9 Tips to a One-of-a-Heeluva Staycation!

Tip No. 1.  No ifs and buts, have that vacation!
To make these things happen, you should first secure the vacation.  Whether it’s your company privilege, a holiday, a much needed break/soul-searching, or err, unemployment, you have to decide when it is.  If not, good heavens, you need to.

Tip No. 2.  Don’t make plans.
The trick for a pleasurable vacation is to do away stress.  Relax.  As weird as it sounds, impose that discipline to the staycation by not allowing daily routines (household chores) to take away the fun.  If you don’t feel the need to do it, don’t do the laundry or clean the garage, or other household projects.  Always remind yourself that, while you are at home, you are still on vacation.  If you do so, this can be more relaxing, fun, and certainly less costly than a big travel extravaganza.

Tip No. 3.  Visit your local art powerhouse.
This covers your hometown’s art/historical museums, botanical/butterfly gardens, zoos, or whatever the interest.  See a show.  Pretend you’re a tourist and go visit them.  Every place in the country has its local attractions, some world class, others, well, just fun.  This may also pave way to certain architectural gems in your area that you haven’t noticed before. No need to plan, just walk into it.

Tip No. 4.  Yes, do that marathon….
Go watch a movie.  You can go to theatres and have a 3D experience or rent a movie from a local rental movie store.  Online movie watching is also an option.

If you are into watching ‘-novelas’ (like the trendy koreanovelas now) or TV series, this is the time to do the marathon.  Just don’t let those pirate copies mess the thrill.  You know what they say, some things are better left unsaid, and I am talking about the subtitles.

Tip no. 5.  Holy cow! Its nature tripping.
Get the bike out.  Go for a ride. There are thousands of miles of dedicated bike trails in your area.  Or take a hike because walking is the best exercise.  Explore nature with packed picnic lunch and water.

Tip no. 6.  Shop and shop.
Go malling.  Make the trek to the nearest mega mall and spend the day seeing what’s new.  It will come with food service, theaters, entertainment, etc.  This also includes touring the local vintage stores.  Who’s in for some thrift shopping?

Tip no. 7.  What about sleeping?
Take naps.  Catch up on sleep in that hammock or bed.  It is more relaxing and restorative.

Tip no. 8.  Bookworm adventures.
Read a book.  You don’t need to be in a faraway island to settle in with a good read.  You can splurge on a frappe or cappuccino or other delights and spend a few hours lost in a book to a local coffee house or the nearest bed.

Tip no. 9.  Spend time with the OTHERS.
Share quality time with kids or your family.  People remember the good times spent with each other more than the places they’ve been.  Spend time talking, laughing, and reminiscing.  Rather, reconnect with pals.  Ask everyone to bring something and share. You can do most of the tips here with them or get out a deck of cards or a board game.

Reasons Why Opt for a Staycation:

  • Less expensive.
  • No travel means no physical drain.  Let’s admit it, travel is exhausting.
  • There will be no wasted travel day on the front and end of a vacation — typical for an out-of-town vacation.
  • If the weather is lousy, who cares?  You can adjust.
  • Really, you don’t have to spend your vacation with strangers, either on flights or in hotels.
  • Your vacation can’t be cancelled by an airline or other travel situation.

Basically, distance is not a necessary element of a fun vacation anyway; the act of travel itself is what makes a vacation relaxing or legitimate. It's the truth that you're leaving behind the responsibilities and stresses of everyday life and allowing yourself to decompress.
