Berjaya Auto Philippines, the exclusive distributor of Mazda vehicles in the country, is launching a nationwide automotive design competition for students.

Coinciding with the Philippine launch of the all-new fourth generation Mazda MX-5 this coming August 2015, the Mazda MX-5 ROADSTER DESIGN COMPETITION is a national design contest organized by Mazda Philippines that aims to discover young, talented design students and offer them a glimpse into the world of automotive and industrial design.

“The Mazda MX-5 has always been an iconic figure in automotive history,” says Steven Tan, President and CEO of Mazda Philippines. “We have always believed in the innate talent and skill of Filipinos and this competition will highlight just that. We would like to see how local designers will be able to capture the essence of the Miata and interpret this into a design that will stand the test of time.”

Organized by Mazda Philippines and the National Council of Industrial Designers, the Mazda MX-5 ROADSTER DESIGN COMPETITION is open to students who are citizens of the Philippines and enrolled in National Council of Industrial Designers-affiliated programs, courses, colleges and universities, either in an undergraduate or graduate capacity. Entries shall be composed of a group of three students and their mentor.

The participating groups will design their interpretation of how the “Mazda MX-5 will look like after 25 years”. A panel of esteemed judges composed of representatives from Berjaya Auto Philippines Inc., and the National Council of Industrial Designers along with Top Gear Philippines Editor-in-Chief Mr. Vernon Sarne and the Chief Designer of the first generation Mazda MX-5 Miata, Mr. Tom Matano, will evaluate their works. The winning group will be sent to Hiroshima, Japan to visit the Mazda Headquarters and Museum. Deadline of submission of entries is on July 31, 2015.

The contest organizers shall announce the winner during the awarding ceremonies to be held at College Of St. Benilde on August 8, 2015. Interested parties are encouraged to visit the Mazda Philippines website for contest rules and requirements.
