NVIDIA Tegra 3 officially launched as the world’s first quad-core mobile processor

NVIDIA officially announced today the Tegra 3, the world's first quad-core mobile processor. The Tegra 3 promises its performance of up to fives times faster than Tegra 2 overall, four times faster for web browsing, three times faster for graphics thanks to its 12-core GeForce GPU. This GPU can also handle 3D, which the Transformer Prime can then output to a bigger screen via HDMI. And Tegra 3 also draws less power than its predecessor. This is largely thanks to a fifth "companion core" that kicks into gear for certain tasks, leaving the four more power hungry cores switched off, as well as a smart 40nm process that employs two different classes of silicon.

The first device to be launched with the new Nvidia Tegra 3 is the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime tablet. The ASUS Transformer Prime will retail for $499 for the 32 GB, and $599 for 64 GB. The mobile dock will be an additional $149.
