Canon, WWF challenge Filipinos to be Superheroes for the Planet

Canon, the world leader in digital imaging, in partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines (WWF-Philippines), launched a photo contest that challenges Filipinos to join forces to save the planet. With the theme “Be a Superhero for the Planet,” the competition acts as an idea bank on what else can be done for the Earth.

“Each person has the power to make a positive difference in the world. We are inviting everyone to share how they use this power for the Earth through photographs,” said Maia Melencio, WWF-Philippines Marketing Services Manager.

The superhero theme can be attributed to Spider-Man being the first superhero ambassador for Earth Hour. Spider-man together with the stars and director of the upcoming film The Amazing Spider-Man 2 namely Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, and Marc Webb, pledge their support for the worldwide Earth Hour Blue crowdfunding project.

To join the photo contest, submit your photos which show how you will protect the environment or how you can be a superhero for the planet. Upload the photo with a brief description on the Canon ImageNation website (http://www6.canon.com.ph/imagenation/testshots/). Deadline for submission of entries is on April 30, 2014. The entries will be judged by both Canon and WWF representatives.

Winners will get the chance to take home Canon prizes: a white EOS 100D for first place, a white PowerShot N for second place and a white Canon PIXMA MG3570 for third place. Five limited edition Canon Hansa models will also be raffled.

“We believe that through photos we are not only capable of sharing our ideas but also of inspiring other people to act and do their part in saving the environment. This is how powerful images can be,” said Ernalou Del Rosario, CMPI corporate communications manager.

This initiative is a part of Canon’s GreenNation campaign which, in the past year alone, has seen thousands of trees planted in La Mesa dam and the development of a climate change educational program for elementary students.

Aside from sponsoring the photo contest, Canon’s Earth Hour participation includes switching off the Canon LED billboard on March 29, 2014 at 8:30pm. Canon will also take the efforts inside the company by implementing internal activities that will encourage the employees to adopt greener lifestyles and take care of the planet.
