Leading telecommunications company Globe Telecom has tapped the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) to be part of the 3rd Cebu Media Excellence Awards (CMEA) in an effort to encourage media practitioners to look deeply into social concerns that are plaguing the country.

CMEA was created by Globe in 2012 to give recognition to Cebu-based print and broadcast professionals and digital media practitioners who do not only excel in their respective fields but also promote social advocacy.

This year, Globe goes beyond the ordinary by partnering with PCIJ to provide strategic direction and leadership for the Explanatory/Investigative Story of the Year Award, one of the highlights of the event.

“Beyond the drive for media excellence in the daily coverage of events, Globe wants to further encourage the media to engage in civic, investigative and explanatory journalism that would delve into social concerns such as freedom from ignorance, poverty and corruption. We acknowledge PCIJ’s role in enhancing the quality of entries in this year's awards,” said Yoly Crisanto, Senior Vice President, Globe Corporate Communications.

The awarding ceremonies will be held on September 25, coinciding with the annual Cebu Press Freedom Week celebration to commemorate the dark days of Martial Law when the basic right of press freedom was curtailed.

Categories in the competition include Explanatory/Investigative Story of the Year for Print, Explanatory/Investigative Story of the Year for Broadcast, Reporter of the Year for Print, Reporter of the Year for TV, Reporter of the Year for Radio, Columnist of the Year, Photojournalist of the Year, Social Media Advocate of the Year, and Blogger of the Year.

As in the previous year, entries shall explore and promote the following advocacies: business and entrepreneurship, information and communications technology, environment and disaster response, governance and social progress and youth and education.

Search period is from August 2013 until July 18, 2014 with the announcement of nominees to be made on August 15, 2014.
